Pregnancy Vitamin: What to Look for

So many options to choose from. All claiming to be the best pregnancy vitamin. Each one promising optimal nutrition. But how do you know which one is right for you?

It can be overwhelming when trying to choose the best for you and your baby. The easiest way to pick a pregnancy vitamin is to understand what exactly you need from that vitamin. Talk to your doctor and see what his specific recommendations are for you. Some may suggest a higher dosage of one nutrient over another.

According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, pregnant women should include the following in their diet: proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fats. These food groups allow you the best nutrition for you and your developing baby. However, if you are not getting enough of these in your daily meals, you should supplement with a pregnancy vitamin.

Pregnancy vitamins differ from regular vitamins in that they offer Folic Acid to help prevent neural tubes and other birth defects pertaining to the brain and spinal cord. Iron also plays a key role during pregnancy as it helps prevent anemia in mom and creates healthy red blood cells in baby. You should also look for a pregnancy vitamin that contains omega-3 fatty acids to help support brain and eye development. Calcium and Vitamin D are especially important during the third trimester. This is the period where your baby's bones are growing and developing at a rapid pace. Also, a pregnancy vitamin should contain Vitamins A, C, E, zinc, and copper, as there are added benefits for mama and baby.

Remember, a pregnancy vitamin is a supplement to an already healthy pregnancy diet!
