No one knows for sure what causes morning sickness, but many believe it's due to pregnancy hormones and your body changing.
The medical term for morning sickness is "nausea and vomiting of pregnancy". Seventy-five percent of pregnant women experience morning sickness, and for some it can last throughout the entire day. About half of all women who have morning sickness feel relief around week 14. For some it can take another month or so to fully get over the nausea and vomiting. A small group of women have morning sickness that lasts throughout their entire pregnancy.
But what causes morning sickness?
Estrogen Levels- Some doctors believe morning sickness is caused by an increase level of estrogen in the body. This hormone can be up to 100 times higher during pregnancy, compared to women who are not pregnant. However, there is no evidence that the increase levels cause nausea and vomiting.
Sense of Smell- During pregnancy there may be an increase of sensitivity to odors which could trigger nausea and vomiting.
Levels of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG)- HCG is another hormone produced in pregnancy that is made by the developing embryo. This hormone helps to prevent disintegration of the ovary, which helps to keep up production of progesterone, which is necessary for pregnancy.
Sensitive Stomach- Some women's stomachs are simply more sensitive to the early changes of pregnancy than others. Some research even shows that women whose stomachs contain the bacteria called Helicobacter pylori are more susceptible to nausea and vomiting.
Stress- While there's no hard evidence to back up the theory that stress causes morning sickness, researchers claim that some women are psychologically predisposed to having nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. However, there's no hard evidence to back this up, you may certainly be feeling more stress as you experience morning sickness!
