One mineral that is essential to a healthy recovery and breastfeeding is iron. Many women lack this necessary nutrient before, during, and after pregnancy. Even more concerning is that women who give birth vaginally often lose a large amount of blood through delivery. In order to offset this, doctors suggest taking a prenatal with iron.
Along with iron, nursing moms need 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day when nursing. Most prenatal vitamins offer around 200mgs of calcium, so you will still need to stock up on calcium-rich foods like cheese and yogurt, and drink plenty of milk!
