Pregnancy Supplements: Vitamins and nutrients During Pregnancy

Never is there a time more crucial in a woman's life to be aware of her health than before, during, and after pregnancy. Being vigilant in getting proper nutrition during this period will ensure health of mom and baby. Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet can be difficult, and thankfully pregnancy supplements help offset any nutritional deficiencies.

During pregnancy, baby will often take whatever nutrition it needs from it's mom, often leaving mother feeling depleted. Dr. Lipman, at The Voice of Sustainable Wellness, suggests the following guidelines when looking for a pregnancy supplement. 

Folate: Any pregnancy supplement worth purchasing should have ample amounts of folate. Taken before conception, this super nutrient helps prevent spina bifida as well as neural tube defects. Your supplement should have around 600-800 mcg of folate, with prescription grade supplements maxing out at 1,000mcg. 

Vitamin D: With more and more research coming in, Vitamin D is proving to be crucial during pregnancies. This nutrient helps reduce many pregnancy complications like preeclampsia and gestational diabetes. Baby's strong bones and healthy  hormones are also derived from mom's intake of Vitamin D. The ideal range for Vitamin D is right around 50-80 ng/ml. 

Magnesium: Severe magnesium deficiency can lead to poor fetal development, preeclampsia, and in extreme cases, fetal death. But the proper magnesium intake during pregnancy, can help boost mom's recovery after delivery. While it is possible to get enough of your daily magnesium intake from food alone, taking a supplement can ensure that you are keeping enough nutrients for yourself as well as passing some along to your baby. Doctors recommend not exceeding 500 mg per day unless otherwise instructed.

Omega 3: Often found in fish, this mega omega helps support your baby's brain and eye development. Not only do they help support baby's development, but Omega 3's can help mom ward off depression after birth and support cardiovascular health. 

Glutathione: While this may not be the most crucial ingredient in your pregnancy supplement, many doctors praise the benefits of glutathione and how it helps the development of the fetus. "In the fetus glutathione detoxifies pollutants before they reach the developing child," says Dr. Lipman. This nutrient also helps support mama's immune function, which is especially important as your immune system is suppressed during pregnancy. But don't over do it! 200mg a day is enough to get the benefits needed. 

While these are just a few ingredients to look for in a pregnancy supplement, your doctor may suggest a higher intake depending on your pregnancy. As with anything you take during pregnancy, make sure you run it by your healthcare professional.
