Infertility: Causes and Treatments

About 1 in 10 couples experience infertility. In general, infertility is described as not being able to conceive after one year of trying to become pregnant. Many factors can play into why a couple is unable to get pregnant.

Ovulation problems are one of the most common causes of infertility. If you are having trouble conceiving and are not having a regular period each month, it could be due to an irregular ovulation cycle.

Another factor in infertility can be attributed to age. A woman becomes less able to conceive once she reaches the age of 32. For men, they will start to see their sperm count begin to decline after the age of 20.

Being overweight also plays a role in being unable to get pregnant. Women and men both should be in good health, live an active lifestyle, and eat a healthy diet. It is also important to note that smoking and consuming alcohol both reduce your chances of conceiving.

Treatments for Infertility

Vitamins, hormone treatments, fertility drugs, reproductive surgery, and assisted reproduction procedures (like IVF) are all options that may help you and your partner become pregnant. While there are many options for infertility treatments, it is best to discuss these with your healthcare provider.
