Benefits of Prenatal Vitamins: Why It's Good to Take a Prenatal Vitamin

Not sure if you should be taking a prenatal vitamin?

Pregnant women and women of childbearing age should be taking a prenatal vitamin. 

Hillary Wright, MEd, RD, says, "Trouble is, many women in their childbearing years don't get the nutrients they need, including folic acid and iron. In addition, the requirements for several vitamins and minerals increase during pregnancy,". Prenatal vitamins are especially helpful to women who have dietary restrictions, health issues, or pregnancy complications. Even if you are healthy and eat a well balanced diet, prenatals are an insurance policy to make sure you are getting all the nutrients you need. 

Some women who are trying to conceive may have difficulties becoming pregnant if they are not getting enough nutrients from their diet. Even if conception occurs, a lack of specific vitamins can have a negative impact on the development of their baby. Prenatal vitamins are created in order to fill in the gap of those deficiencies and ensure that mom and baby are getting all of the nutrients and minerals they need. 

Prenatal vitamins are also proven to help reduce nausea during pregnancy. Research shows that Vitamin B6 reduces morning sickness. Women who take a daily prenatal vitamin during the first few weeks of pregnancy experience fewer episodes of nausea and vomiting. Taking a prenatal vitamin helps keep the morning sickness at bay. 

Not all prenatals are created equal though. If you doctor recommends a higher dosage of a specific vitamin, make sure to read the label carefully. Prenatal supplements can contain other vitamins and trace minerals too, but they differ in amounts depending on the brand.
